Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan made his much-awaited Test debut for India in Rajkot after piling on the runs in domestic cricket and averaging almost 70. He made an immediate impact with the bat scoring 62 off 66 balls batting at number six.
Sarfaraz’s Test debut was an emotional moment for him and his family. His father was in tears seeing his son wear the India Test cap. The 26-year-old made the most of his first opportunity with the bat. He scored 62 off 66 balls and added a 77-run stand for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja who went on to score his fourth Test ton.
The television commentators were also happy to see the youngster score impactful runs on his very first opportunity with the bat. Sarfaraz Khan scored almost 4000 runs in just 45 FC matches with an average of 69.85 and a strike rate of 70.48. This included 14 hundreds and 11 fifties.
He has averaged over 100 in his last two domestic seasons in the Ranji Trophy and him getting to make his Test debut brought a smile on the faces of many. His innings was cut short due to a mix-up with Jadeja in the 82nd over when he was looking good to possibly score a century.
Jadeja’s defensive push was hard enough to reach Mark Wood who was fielding inside the circle at long on. He was quick to attack the ball and hit the stumps on the full. Sarfaraz who took a start at the non-striker’s end was late to return back to the crease. Indian captain Rohit Sharma was absolutely livid with the dismissal especially since it came in the fag end of the day’s play.

Sarfaraz spoke to the reporters after the game and he spoke about the conversation between him and Jadeja during their 77-run partnership. He also spoke about his run-out dismissal.
“At times there is miscommunication and it is a part of the game,” Sarfaraz said in the press conference.

The debutant further spoke about his partnership with Ravindra Jadeja and said how the senior partner helped him ride his innings. Jadeja was seemingly dejected after Sarfaraz’s dismissal given their partnership was really flourishing.
“Mujhe baat karke khelna accha lagta hai (I like talking while batting). So I told Jadeja to keep talking to me while I bat. He supported me a lot today and spoke to me at lunchtime,” he said.
The 26-year-old further spoke about making his father’s dream a reality as he made his Test debut for India.
“I was just very happy. I wanted to play India once during my father’s lifetime. That was my one dream. So only that was running in my mind. My father was not coming first for the match. After that some people told him to go to the match, this is the proudest moment. So obviously, he had to come because he had worked so hard for this day” said Sarfaraz.
“So the only thing that was running in my mind was that I will take the cap in front of him. He was also emotional. My wife was also emotional. It felt like some of the burden had been lifted of me as the work he had in put in for me, I didn’t let it go to waste” he concluded saying.
India ended day 1 on 326/6 with Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 110 and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav unbeaten on 1 off 10 balls. India will look to add as many as possible on the board on day 2.
