The second semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was played between Temba Bavuma-led South Africa National Cricket Team and Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, November 16.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first in the match. They made one change to their playing XI as Tabraiz Shamsi replaced Lungi Ngidi. The Aussies also made a couple of changes as Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc returned to the playing XI while Marcus Stoinis and Sean Abbott missed out.

The decision to bat first wasn’t a good one for the team as they faced a top-order collapse. Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram failed miserably to leave the Proteas in a spot of bother.

However, David Miller joined forces with Heinrich Klaasen to bring his team back into the match. They added 95 runs in 113 balls to put the opposition bowlers under pressure. The duo were playing good cricket, but the partnership was broken by part-timer Travis Head.

David Miller smashed a sensational century and steered his side to a decent total of 212 runs on the board. He scored 101 runs off 116 balls, with 8 fours and 5 sixes. On the other hand, Klaasen chipped in with 47 runs off 48 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

Chasing the target, openers David Warner and Travis Head provided their side with a terrific start. The duo played an attacking brand of cricket and pushed the Proteas on the backfoot. Travis Head smashed a brilliant 62 runs but other than him no batter hit a fifty.

After that, the Proteas bowling unit showed their class and brought back the momentum towards their side. They picked wickets at regular intervals and pushed the Aussies on the back foot.

In the end, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins stitched together a crucial 22-run partnership to steer their team to victory. The Aussies won the match by 3 wickets. Australia will next take on India National Cricket Team in the summit clash of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.
