Ben Stokes, according to former England captain Michael Vaughan, is the top frontrunner to succeed Joe Root as England’s Test captain. The cricketer-turned-commentator, meanwhile, is concerned that the all-rounder would overwork himself by attempting to do everything.
Root quit as the Test captain on Friday, April 15, ending a five-year reign. While the 31-year-batsmanship old’s has been superb, England’s recent setbacks have rendered his situation untenable. He did, however, end up as England’s most successful Test captain.
Vaughan remarked that taking on too much responsibility would not benefit him and would have a detrimental impact on his performance. The 47-year-old penned the following:
“My little concern is that Ben will attempt to do everything, and if he does, he will not be able to nail his own performances. It’s simply a matter of putting the right people in the right roles – England has a large number of support personnel that must be properly trained. People who tell Ben, “Ben, you can’t do everything,” are exactly what he needs.”
Michael Vaughan shares views on Ben Stokes:
Despite Stokes’ lack of captaincy experience, Michael Vaughan stated that his presence made a significant difference. Michael Vaughan also believes the southpaw has a tremendous desire to succeed. He expressed himself thusly:
“Yes, Stokes has limited experience as a captain. However, if you have a presence and a sense of the game, this isn’t always necessary. You have no notion what someone will be like when they take over the role. But, as you can see when he bats, he has a fantastic cricket mind. And he has a remarkable will to succeed.”
In the first Test of the 2020 home summer, Stokes captained England, but the hosts were defeated.
