Former Pakistan bowler Mohammad Asif recalled the 2007 T20 World Cup final, in which Pakistan fell to India in the last over and India went on to win the tournament.

Misbah-ul-Haq attempted a scoop shot over the short fine-leg with four required off of six deliveries; it flew straight up in the air; Sreesanth got the catch; and India went on to win the first T20 World Cup.

Mohammad Asif Recalls End Moments Of The 2007 T20 World Cup Final Against India

The 36-year-old pacer Mohammad Asif explained these things to YouTuber Reyan Sayed:

“My main memory is of the final match when Misbah played that shot. I was there at the non-striker’s end. We had hit a four off the second last ball of the 19th over and Misbah had hit a six off the first ball of the 20th over.

Then I went to him (Misbah) and said Chachu. He’s elder to me so I call him chachu. Don’t take singles and doubles. Go and hit a six as you did on the first ball. The bowler (Joginder Sharma) had lost his rhythm and had no pace. But Misbah played a wrong shot in the wrong direction and we lost the world cup. That will remain the saddest moment for me.”

Together with speedster Mohammad Amir and then-captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif was one of three players punished for spot-fixing in 2011. Mohammad Asif also stated in a prior interview that if the PCB had no difficulty handing Amir national call-ups, then it should have no problem giving him an opportunity as well.

For his involvement in the spot-fixing controversy during Pakistan’s tour of England, Mohammad Asif received a seven-year suspension in 2011. Moreover, he received a one-year jail term, which he completed in half. The three players were permitted to resume playing in all formats of the game in 2015 after the ICC lifted its earlier ban.
