Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as India's new T20I captain after emerging as the preferred choice of the selectors. According to reports, the decision followed extensive discussions, with Iyer's leadership success in domestic and franchise cricket playing a major role in his promotion.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming T20I tours of Ireland and England. Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as captain for the two-match series against Ireland, which begins in Belfast on June 26, before the five-match series against England.

Gautam Gambhir Wanted a Change, but Ajit Agarkar Wanted Shreyas Iyer

According to a report by CricBlogger, there were differing views within the team management and selection committee over India's next T20I captain. Head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted a change in leadership following Suryakumar Yadav's dip in form. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar backed Shreyas Iyer for the role.

"Gambhir wanted a change, but Agarkar wanted Iyer," the source said.

The report added that Gambhir initially considered Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as captaincy options. However, Agarkar reportedly argued that if IPL performances and leadership credentials were the key factors, Iyer stood out as the strongest candidate.

How Shreyas Iyer Won the Captaincy Race

Gautam Gambhir believed recent performances should carry significant weight in selection decisions. The report claimed that the India head coach felt Suryakumar Yadav's prolonged dip in form weakened his case to continue as T20I captain, despite the team's success under his leadership.

The report further stated that Gambhir discussed the possibility of replacing Suryakumar during IPL 2026. Suryakumar lost both the captaincy and his place in the T20I squad, despite leading India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year and maintaining an unbeaten bilateral series record as captain.

Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine innings during the T20 World Cup 2026 at an average of 30.25, with only one half-century. Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, earned the selectors' backing and was handed the leadership role despite not having played a T20I for India since the series against Australia in December 2023.

Shreyas Iyer Strengthens His Case with Proven Leadership Record

Shreyas Iyer's appointment as India's new T20I captain reflects his impressive leadership record in franchise cricket. Ajit Agarkar was highly impressed by Iyer's ability to lead different teams successfully and consistently deliver strong results in major tournaments.

Iyer has captained teams in 101 IPL matches and won 55 of them. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, guided Delhi Capitals to their first-ever final in 2020, and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

Although Punjab Kings missed the playoffs in IPL 2026, Iyer enjoyed an excellent season with the bat. He scored 498 runs in 13 innings at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 168.81, registering one century and five half-centuries during the campaign.

Iyer made his T20I debut for India against New Zealand in November 2017. He has scored 1,104 runs in 47 T20I innings at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12, including eight half-centuries, with the highest score being an unbeaten 74 against Sri Lanka.
