Indian pacer Ishant Sharma, who is the only second fast bowler after the great Kapil Dev to play 100 Tests, believes that he could’ve achieved that milestone in ODIs. Ishant Sharma revealed the lowest point in his career, saying that his perception about his white-ball game changed after the 2023 ODI against Australia.

Australia were needed 44 runs in the last three overs to win with Adam Voges and James Faulkner at the crease with four wickets in hand. Ishant conceded 30 runs in an over as James Faulkner smashed one boundary and four sixes. Australia came into a comfortable position and chased down the target with three balls to spare.

It Was Very Tough For Me – Ishant Sharma

Speaking on Cricbuzz’s “Rise of New India” show, Ishant Sharma recalled his lowest moment in an ODI match against Australia in 2013, where he was smashed for 30 runs in an over by James Faulkner. The right-arm pacer revealed that he cried for almost a month as India lost the match due to his 30-run over.

“My lowest moment was that 2013 match in Mohali against Australia. I don’t know if I could ever have moment worse than that because I was…I don’t know. It was very tough for me. And it wasn’t because I gave away a lot of runs,” Ishant Sharma told cricbuzz.

“The thing that hurt me the most was I was the reason behind the team’s loss. I was dating my wife at that time and I just spoke to her and I think I just cried for almost a month. I used to call her everyday and cry over the phone saying that team lost because of me,” he added.

Mahi Bhai Came To My Room – Ishant Sharma

The fast bowler further stated that he received support from then-captain MS Dhoni and teammate Shikhar Dhawan after a match. The Delhi-born cricketer said that perceptions about his white-ball game changed after that.

“The good thing that happened was Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) came to my room and Shikhar (Dhawan), who was playing that game, also came and said, ‘Look you have been doing well (Dekh, tu acha khel raha hai).’ Because of that one match, there became a perception that I am not a white-ball bowler,” he added.

Ishant Sharma was dropped from the team after the match and played only a few matches in the 50-over format. He last played his ODI game against Australia in 2016 and was not considered for the selection despite being a regular member of the Test squad.
