Indian batsman Sarfaraz Khan fell for 62 runs from 66 balls on his Test debut due to a disastrous run out courtesy of his partner Ravindra Jadeja. Ravindra Jadeja called for a single after playing a drive against James Anderson. Though it was too late for Sarfaraz Khan, Jadeja denied the run after taking two steps.
Fielder Mark Wood hit a bullseye from mid-off, giving Sarfaraz no time to reverse course and head back to the crease. The right-hander finally had to make his way back to the dressing room. Infuriated at the run-out, Indian captain Rohit Sharma hurled his cap into the changing room.
Former Indian spinner Anil Kumble while speaking to Jio Cinema, stated that Sarfaraz Khan was dominating the partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. Kumble stated that Jadeja went into a shell wherein sometimes batsmen are not clear about the decision-making.
Anil Kumble expresses his opinion on Sarfaraz Khan run out
Anil Kumble said, “Sarfaraz was dominating in that partnership. Jadeja, I thought had got into a shell, that sometimes creates a mindset where you are not clear about the decision making. And maybe that was one of the reasons and possibly I passed on my bad luck of getting run out on debut because I got run out on my debut. But at least he got 65 (Sarfaraz scored 62) more.”
Sarfaraz Khan reached the fifty-run mark in just 48 balls and equaled Hardik Pandya’s record to score the joint second-fastest Test half-century by an Indian batsman. Sarfaraz also added 77 runs from 110 balls along with Ravindra Jadeja and gave an aggressive push to the Indian innings.
India were able to end Day 1 of the third Test match with a score of 326/5. Indian batsmen Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are unbeaten on the crease at 110 and 1 run respectively. However, the start of the day was like a nightmare for the hosts as they lost three wickets for just 33 runs.
Indian batsmen such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill who were centurions in the second Test match were dismissed cheaply for 10 and 0 runs. Jaiswal scored a double hundred in the Vizag Test whereas Gill smashed a hundred in the second innings. Rajat Patidar as well was not able to do much and walked back to the dressing room after scoring 9 runs.
However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja rose to the occasion and added 204 runs from 329 balls for the fourth wicket. Sharma slammed his 13th Test hundred and smashed 14 fours and three sixes in his 131-run innings.
Mark Wood was the most successful England bowler on Day 1 and ended up the day by picking up 3 wickets. 1 wicket went to Tom Hartley.
India would be aiming to stretch their overnight score to a big first innings total and strengthen their place in the match. The five-match series is currently levelled at 1-1 and the hosts would look forward to continuing the winning momentum and gaining a lead in the series by winning the 3rd Test.
India won the second Test match by 106 runs whereas England were able to achieve a remarkable win in the Hyderabad Test by 28 runs.
