Updated - 19 Aug 2022, 05:53 PM

Former India National Cricket Team player Vinod Kambli, who became the first cricketer in the history of the game to score a century in an ODI game on his birthday, has said that he is ready to quit alcohol immediately for a job.

Left-handed batsman Vinod Kambli was an exceptionally talented player, but he ended up playing only 17 Tests for India National Cricket Team despite smashing 1084 Test runs at an average of 54.2 with 4 tons, including 2 double centuries, because of his flamboyant personality and indiscipline.

The financial condition of the former India batter is not very good nowadays and his only source of income is “BCCI’s Rs 30,000 pension”.

Speaking to Mid-day, Vinod Kambli had revealed that he had smashed a ton in a Ranji Trophy game after having 10 pegs of hard liquor the previous night.

“Our coach Balvinder Singh Sandhu was worried whether I would wake up on time. I did and scored a hundred,” he said.

However, he is now ready to quit alcohol for a coaching job. Kambli also said that he is not an alcohol addict and is just a social drinker.

“There are rules and regulations which everyone has to follow. If there are any rules that don’t allow you to do certain things, everyone must follow them. I will stop it [drinking] immediately if told to do so…no problem at all! Kambli told Mid-day while adding that he is now a social drinker anyway. Who doesn’t do it,” he asked.

The 50-year-old further said that he needs an assignment where he can work with young players. He added that he is ready to help Mumbai Cricket in whatever capacity possible as it has given him a lot.

“I need assignments, where I can work with youngsters. I know Mumbai have retained Amol [Muzumdar] as their head coach, but if anywhere I am needed, I am there.

“We have played together and we were a great team. That’s what I want them [current Mumbai team] to do…to play as a team. I was seeking help from the MCA [Mumbai Cricket Association].”

“I came into the CIC [Cricket Improvement Committee], but it was an honorary job. I went to the MCA for some help. I have a family to look after.

“I told the MCA many times that if you require me, I am there whether it is at the Wankhede Stadium or at BKC. Mumbai cricket has given me a lot. I owe my life to this game,” he added.
