In a big blow to Rohit Sharma's India, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a replacement for Bumrah as the team changes its plans without its premier bowler.
Jasprit Bumrah suffered a back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney last month. He has failed to regain full fitness in time for the Champions Trophy. Notably, it is the second time in five years that Jasprit Bumrah has missed a major ICC event due to injury, previously missing the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Confirms BCCI
On Tuesday night, the BCCI officially confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy through a press release. The board revealed that fast bowler Harshit Rana has been named Bumrah’s replacement in the squad for the tournament.
"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement," the BCCI said in a release late night on Tuesday.
Jasprit Bumrah was last seen in action during a 50-over match for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia on November 19, 2023. He last played for India during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bumrah did not bowl in the second innings of the New Year Test.
Varun Chakravarthy Replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal in India's Champions Trophy Squad
Further, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the provisional 15-man squad. Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, who made his ODI debut during the second ODI match in Cuttack, replaced Jaiswal.
The BCCI named three non-traveling substitutes: Jaiswal, pacer Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Shivam Dube. These players will join the squad in Dubai if needed during the tournament.
“Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal who was initially named in the provisional squad," the release added.
"The three players will travel to Dubai as and when required," the board said.
Yashasvi Jaiswal made his ODI debut in the first match of the series against England. The left-handed batter scored 15 runs off 22 balls before being dropped for the second ODI, where Virat Kohli returned to the playing XI. Varun Chakaravarthy recorded bowling figures of 1/54 in 10 overs in the second ODI.
