ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year 2024 announced; Jasprit Bumrah among 3 Indians featured

The ICC Men's Test Team of the Year 2024 has been announced and three Indian players have made it to the Playing XI. As expected, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is in the team which also has the likes of Pat Cummins.

The other two Indians in this team are Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja. Jaiswal had a brilliant year while opening the batting while Jadeja continued his dominance with both bat and ball.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Duckett to open

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Duckett are the openers in this team. Both are aggressive batters at the top order and had a wonderful year in 2024. Jaiswal started the year brilliantly in the home series against England, amassing 712 runs in five Tests, easily the most in the series.

The left-hander continued his great form in the remaining Tests as well. He also emerged as India's highest run-scorer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored 1478 runs in 15 Tests in 2024 at an average of 54.74 and emerged as the second-highest run-getter of 2024.

Meanwhile, Ben Duckett scored 1149 runs in 17 Tests and was the third-highest run-scorer behind Jaiswal. His average was just 37.06 but scored runs at a strike rate of 87.04.

Experienced middle order

The middle order has loads of experience with Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Harry Brook. It was a year barred with injuries for Williamson but he finally made a Test comeback during the home Test series against England.

He started his year brilliantly 403 runs in two Tests against South Africa. Later, he smashed 395 runs in three Tests against England to cap off another brilliant year.

Root continued his brilliant run in Test cricket and emerged as the highest run-scorer in 2024 with 1556 runs in 17 Tests at an average of 55.57. He started the year with a few disappointing innings in India but soon gained form to finish the series well.

Root was at his best during the home Test series during which he surpassed Alastair Cook's record of most Test hundreds by an England player. Meanwhile, another England batter Harry Brook also had a brilliant Test year.

The right-hander amassed 1100 runs at an average of 55 and a brilliant strike rate of 85. After missing the Test tour to India,, he came into his own in the remaining Tests and established himelf as the next best thing in English cricket.

Excellent year for Kamindu Mendis

Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis had a fantastic return to his Test career. he scored hundreds in both the innings against Bangladesh in Sylhet and also finished as the top-scorer of the series.

However, his best came in the Test tour to England when he scored 267 runs in the series to emerge as Sri Lanka's highest run-scorer. The left-hander scored 1049 runs overall at an average of 74.92.

Jamie Smith has been selected as the wicketkeeper in this squad after a stellar start to his Test career. Smith has scored 637 runs in 2024 at an average of 42.46. He also completed 31 catches and 1 stumping as the wicketkeeper.

Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins highlight the bowling

Ravindra Jadeja is the only spinner in the squad which shows his growth as a bowler over the years. The left-hander scored 527 runs in 2024 at an average of 29.27 and also finished with 48 wickets at an average of 24.29.

Pat Cummins, Matt Henry, and Jasprit Bumrah are the three fast bowlers in the squad. While Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins' inclusion was a no-brainer, Matt Henry has risen through the ranks in red-ball cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah is also the highest-wicket taker of the year with a staggering tally of 71 wickets on just 13 Tests at an average of 14.92. Meanwhile, Henry has picked up 48 wickets and Cummins finished with 37 wickets in nine Tests each.
