ICC slaps India with huge punishment over their act in Raipur ODI vs South Africa
PC: X

The ICC has found India guilty of breaching the time limit for the innings and has fined the team 10% of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI in Raipur. India was under pressure in the game, and bowlers went for repeated conversations with the senior cricketers on the field.

India played the second match of the South Africa ODI series in Raipur. India, despite having scored 358 runs in their batting innings with two magnificent hundreds from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, were placed between the grind as the Proteas batters, too, gathered runs with ease.

During the game, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were constantly seen engaging in discussions alongside the young pacers as well as skipper KL Rahul. Several field changes were also often made, and all this delayed the gap between balls and the overs, which led to the violation of the time limit of the innings.

ICC fines India after slow-over rate in Raipur

India has been fined 10% of the match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI in Raipur. Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of match referees imposed the sanction when he found the Indian skipper, KL Rahul, and his side guilty of breaching the code.

The investigations found India to be short by two overs of the target and hence were charged according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences.

Indian players also fined 5% of their match fees

Alongside the team, the players who were part of the Indian playing XI were also held equally responsible for the delay and hence, were fined five percent of their match fees for every over that the team failed to bowl within the stipulated time.

The Indian captain for the series, KL Rahul, pleaded guilty to the charges, which led to an immediate sanction being issued without the need for any further hearing. This was the only time India was fined for a slow over rate in the series.

Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his maiden hundred at Raipur

India had once again lost the toss at Raipur and was sent in to bat first, like in Ranchi. South Africa always wanted the draw to act in their favour, hence, they had no concerns with the Indians doing the maximum of the scoring.

Batting first, India put on a mammoth 358 runs on the board, with Virat Kohli scoring his second consecutive hundred in the series and his 84th in international cricket. Moreover, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the youngster playing his second game, also scored a century off just 77 balls.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, with the century, went on to claim the fourth spot in the Indian playing XI for the ODIs, at least until Shreyas Iyer, the vice-captain, makes a return to the team. Gaikwad is most likely to feature in the upcoming New Zealand ODI series at home as well.
