South Africa was designated as the host of the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday.

The tournament was originally set to take place in 2021 but was postponed owing to the outbreak of COVID-19. It will now take place in January 2023.

At the ICC Board Meeting on Sunday, the new date for the event was set. The inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup will take place a month before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023, which will also be hosted in South Africa from February 9 to February 16.

The event will include 16 teams from around the world, with a total of 41 matches scheduled, according to the ICC press release. After a delay caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, Cricket South Africa’s Chief Executive Pholetsi Moseki congratulated the ICC on behalf of the board, saying they are happy to finally welcome the U19 players for the inaugural T20 World Cup.

“This is excellent news, and we appreciate the ICC’s confidence in South Africa, as well as our vision and ambition to collaborate to host this historic event,” Moseki said.

“After the COVID-19 delays, we are thrilled to finally welcome the rising stars of the future onto our beaches for what will be an exciting, lesson-filled, and potentially life-changing event,” he added.

“After witnessing the excellent performances at the recent World Cup, the host towns and venues will be just as thrilled and ready to set the world stage for the potential cricketers to perform on and be immersed in what will be their first big competition,” Moseki said.

In 2007, South Africa hosted the maiden edition of the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup, which India won after defeating Pakistan.
