The national selection committee is anticipated to select a squad of more than 15 members before the start of the ODI World Cup 2023, set to be played at home. The selectors are likely to pick a squad of 16 to 18 members for both the Asia Cup and the Australia home series.

As per ICC rules, participating teams are required to submit their initial squad of 15 members by September 5. The final submission for the squad can be made by September 27. The team is allowed to make any number of changes between the initial and final submissions.

India’s Combination Remains Unsettled For World Cup

The Rohit Sharma-led team is set to participate in the next ODI match during the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup. Following the tournament, the Men in Blue will engage in a three-match ODI series against Australia on home soil, with the final match on September 27.

The current Indian squad composition appears to be unsettled. The return of injured batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer could bolster the team’s chances as strong title contenders. However, the selectors will have to pick the right bowling combination for the slow pitches.

Debate Over Extra Seamer And Third Spinner

Jasprit Bumrah, currently recovering from his injury, is set to make his comeback during the Ireland series. Bumrah is expected to lead the bowling attack, along with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. Hardik Pandya is expected to contribute as the fourth fast bowler.

The selectors have to choose between the extra seamer and the third spinner in the squad. Shardul Thakur’s impressive performance in the three-match ODI series in the West Indies boosts his selection, while Jaydev Unadkat’s advantage lies in his role as a left-arm seamer.

Axar Patel is expected to secure the third spinner’s spot alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal was included in the second-string squad against Ireland, with middle-order batter Sanju Samson among the potential World Cup contenders.
