Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh opened up about India’s failure to win International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies over the last decade in international cricket. Harbhajan Singh pointed out that Indian players didn’t perform as a unit in knockout games in the ICC tournaments.
The Men in Blue haven’t won an ICC Trophy since the Champions Trophy in 2013. India faced four losses in final matches, including the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, and four losses in semi-final matches. They suffered a group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE.

It’s Very Difficult For Me To Say – Harbhajan Singh
During an interaction with News24 Sports, Harbhajan Singh emphasized the importance of playing as a team to win the major tournaments.
“I don’t know, it’s very difficult for me to say what we had and they don’t. I believe players who play for the country, in whichever era they might be playing, their only motive is to play well and win for the nation,” Harbhajan said.

“We played till the semi-finals in 2015 and 2019, the ICC trophy didn’t come. Maybe the ability to punch back after absorbing the pressure has probably been seen in only one or two players. You need to play big tournaments as a team,” he added.

Everyone Has To Walk Together With The Same Motive – Harbhajan Singh
The cricketer-turned-commentator described Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya as big players who require support from other players in ICC events. He highlighted that small contributions can have an impact on the outcome of the match.
“You have Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya – they are big players but along with these three players, the rest of the eight to ten players and the team management, everyone has to walk together with the same motive,” he further stated.
“The small-small things like saving a single or a brilliant run-out, all those are also huge things. So when the team plays as a unit, they can produce bigger results and that is what probably our team did better. Maybe they are much better than our team talent-wise,” he concluded.
India will aim to end their trophy drought when they host the ODI World Cup 2023 later this year. The Rohit Sharma-led team will start as favorites to win the tournament, given their familiarity with the conditions.
