Former India batsman Aakash Chopra has urged the Indian team management to work on those batters who have the ability to bowl a few overs during a game.
Team India have a severe dearth of part-time bowlers as of now. In fact, the team management is facing the issue for quite some time now. It will definitely be a huge concern for Team India ahead of the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup at home. Over the years one has seen the importance of part-time bowlers in the ODI format of the game.
They add more balance to the team with their bowling skill. India had the luxury of several part-time bowlers in the 2000s. Legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, and Yuvraj Singh were not only good with the bat but were also decent bowlers. Even Suresh Raina was capable of bowling a few overs for the team.
Who can forget the 2011 World Cup where Yuvraj picked up 15 wickets including a five-wicket haul with his left-arm spin? Yuvraj was the second-highest wicket-taker for India in the competition and his bowling played a key role in India’s triumphant campaign.
And with yet another World Cup on the horizon, Aakash Chopra has urged the Indian team to develop some part-time bowlers. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the former cricketer-turned-commentator pointed out the lack of part-time bowlers in the team and stated that the team must start working on those batters who have the ability to do so, writing:
Aakash Chopra’s Views On Current Indian Batters:
“Considering that most of the current Indian batters don’t bowl even a couple of overs, Indian team must start pushing for batters who do. Yashasvi-Tilak should be given a longer rope…and encouraged to bowl as often as possible. Washington has to be in India’s T20 scheme of things too,” Aakash Chopra stated

India coach on part-time bowlers:
India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey recently spoke about the importance of having part-time bowlers in the team. The coach revealed that the team management is working on the bowling of Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“When you have someone who can chip in, it is nice. I have seen Tilak and Yashasvi bowl since U19 days. They are capable of being good bowlers. They can work on it at this level. When you got options like these, it is nice to have them. We will see them bowl soon hopefully, we are working on it. It will take time. Soon, we will see them bowling an over at least,” said Paras in a pre-match press conference during the T20I series against West Indies.
