England fast bowler Reece Topley is optimistic about making it into the national team for the World Cup 2023, which is set to be played in India between October and November. Reece Topley said that he will be able to play all ODI matches for England before the marquee event.

Reece Topley suffered an injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The left-arm pacer was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 1.9 crore. He bowled only two overs in his first IPL match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) before suffering a dislocated right shoulder.

I Knew I Was Going Home – Reece Topley

Reece Topley recalled his injury at the Chinnaswamy in April of this year. He is set to make his comeback by representing Surrey in a 50-over contest against Suffolk next week.

“I knew I was going home. When I was sat in Bangalore with my humerus bone in front of my pec, I was just like, ‘wow, how quickly can I get home to have surgery?’ It wasn’t like I was going to hang around or whatever. It was just, like, let’s just get out of here,” Topley said.

Those Games Will Be Quite Pivotal – Reece Topley

The fast bowler said that the ODI series against New Zealand and Ireland will be crucial for him leading up to the World Cup, despite the conditions being different from India.

“The Hundred is almost like end-stage rehab, I guess. Obviously I’ll look to put in some good performances and I’ll want to do well for Superchargers because we’ve got a great squad that wants to go all the way,” he added.

“But then, obviously, you got New Zealand and Ireland. Those games will be quite pivotal in the lead-up to the World Cup. I know that the conditions are slightly different, but 50 overs is something we don’t play a lot of anymore, so that game-time in an ODI will be massively important. So I’ll look to hopefully play those, and get up to speed as soon as possible.”

Reece Topley has represented England in 22 ODI matches, taking 33 wickets. He achieved the best bowling figures (6/24) by an England bowler in an ODI against India at Lord’s last year. He was part of the England squad that reached the final of the World T20 in Kolkata in 2016.
