Former Indian bowler RP Singh has backed the ODI World Cup selection of Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav. The World Cup will be played in India from October 5-November 19 2023.

Suryakumar Yadav batted at number three in the first ODI against West Indies and scored just 19 off 25 balls. While he is in top form in T2I cricket, SKY has not been able to make the most of his ODI chances. With Shreyas Iyer likely to be fit ahead of the World Cup, he is the designated number four in the batting lineup.

KL Rahul is another player who can fight for that number four spot along with SKY and Iyer. Speaking to Jio Cinema, RP Singh said that both SKY and Iyer are capable of batting at number four for India in the World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav Is A Good Option For Number 4 Along With Shreyas Iyer: RP Singh

“Suryakumar Yadav is a good option for No 4, along with Shreyas (Iyer), provided he is fit. But if you are looking at him even as a backup option, it is important to give him game-time and he is certainly a good pick,” said RP Singh during an interaction organized by Jio Cinema.

While Yadav has not been able to stamp his authority in the ODI team, scoring just 452 runs from 24 matches, Shreyas Iyer is currently in rehab for his back injury. The management is keenly looking forward to his comeback along with Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah.

The former pacer pointed out India’s lack of options at number four saying that it is important to have backup options in an event like the World Cup. Sanju Samson is another good option for the number four spot but the management is not too keen on giving him a go. He was dropped as Ishan Kishan was chosen over him as the specialist wicketkeeper-batsman. The selection, however, irked the Indian fans who expressed their anger on Twitter.

You Must Have Options In Major Tournaments: RP Singh

“You must always have backup options heading into major tournaments. His current form in T20 cricket has been very good, one-day format is different because you have (to face) more number of balls. Due to that, he will have to change his game-plan a bit,” RP Singh concluded saying.

The second IND vs WI ODI will be played on Saturday in Barbados.
