ICC World Cup 2023: "Should Stick With Him Because He's The Sort Of Player That Can Win You A World Cup" - Ricky Ponting Backs Suryakumar Yadav

Former Australian cricketer and World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting urged the Indian team management to stick with Suryakumar Yadav in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be played in India later this year. Ricky Ponting backed Suryakumar Yadav, who has been through a difficult phase in the ODIs.
Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t a regular member of the Indian ODI set-up. However, the right-handed batter got a chance to bat in place of an injured Shreyas Iyer in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia. The 32-year-old batter’s place in the team came under fire after he registered three back-to-back golden ducks in the three matches.

Everyone In Their Career Goes Through Something Like That – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting believes that Suryakumar Yadav would fit in the Indian middle order in the 50-over format despite his failures in the ODI series against Australia, as every cricketer goes through ups and downs in their career.
“Yeah, absolutely. Everyone in their career goes through something like that,” Ricky Ponting told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.
“I mean, I’m not sure I have seen it before where someone’s got three first-ball ducks in a row in an entire series. But look, we’ve all been there. You have your ups and downs as international players,” he said.

He Might Be A Little Bit Inconsistent – Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting has praised Suryakumar for his outstanding performances in the T20 format in the last year and said that he has the ability to win a World Cup. The former Australia skipper believes that Suryakumar can play a huge role in the big matches like Andrew Symonds used to do for Australia in the past.
“His previous 12 or 18 months have been absolutely outstanding. And everyone around the world knows what Surya can do in white-ball cricket. I feel they should stick with him because he’s the sort of player that can win you a World Cup,” he added.

“He might be a little bit inconsistent, but he’s the sort of guy that in big moments can win you games. A bit like the late great Andrew Symonds did for Australia. So that’s definitely the way that I’d look at it for India. I wouldn’t be playing safe. I’d be going with match-winning players, and I think he’s a match-winner,” Ponting noted.
Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are set to miss the upcoming ODI World Cup at home due to their injuries, respectively. Their unavailability could open the doors for Suryakumar Yadav in the Indian cricket team in the 50-over format.
