Ex-Indian batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar believes that India should be aware of failing to win yet another world cup. As this time, the careers of important players on the team could be in jeopardy.

Since winning the 2013 Champions Trophy, India have failed to win even a single ICC trophy. They were defeated by Sri Lanka in the final of the World T20 in 2014, lost to Australia in the semi-final of the 2015 ODI World Cup, lost to West Indies in the 2016 World T20 semi-final, lost to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions trophy final, lost to New Zealand in 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final, to NZ again in 2021 WTC final, and lost to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final.

The only time the Indian national team failed to make it to the knockout rounds was in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Injuries to the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Prasidh Krishna, etc threaten to derail India’s World Cup hopes in 2023.

Sunil Gavaskar believes that the team’s current strategy of resting players and frequent changes to the team could hamper the side’s chances. He also warns that failing to win the World Cup on home soil could end a few careers.

“In a World Cup year any match missed means preparation gets hampered as the balance of the team gets affected. Another failure to win a World Cup will have repercussions that could possibly end a few international careers and that should be a red flag for those talking burnout and missing games for India,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar speaks against the idea of India’s senior players resting for workload management

Sunil Gavaskar also expressed displeasure towards the idea of important players to the national side being rested before the World Cup.

Many players have spoken about workload management going into big tournaments like the WTC final and the World Cup for India. Gavaskar seems to believe the contrary.

“I feel that if Indian cricket is to become more professional, a line needs to be drawn. If you want to be rested, you need to reduce your guarantees. Then you take rest, because you don’t want to play. But how can anyone say that I don’t want to play for the Indian team. Which is why I do not agree to the concept,” Sunil Gavaskar.

While players do need game time before a tournament like the World Cup to gauge their form, players also need to stay fit to make it to those tournaments.
