ICC World Cup 2023 Venue Speculations Rife As India-Pakistan Political Rivalries Take Centre Stage- Reports

The much anticipated ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is set to begin in October 2023. India would be keen to end the drought of 9 years of an ICC tournament as we have witnessed how India have succumbed to pressure in crunch matches after performing exceptionally well in group stages.

This marquee ODI WC 2023 tournament is expected to reignite ODI cricket as over the last couple of years we have witnessed a lot of T20 WCs & franchise leagues. This is the first time that India would host the entire ODI WC in India (*2011 WC was hosted by India, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh).

PCB has threatened BCCI to pull out of the WC 2023 citing security issues. BCCI has made it clear that they won’t travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023 & stated that the sponsors & organizers would think twice before making a decision for the tournament.

ODI WC 2023 to be played in India

According to multiple media reports, it was stated that PCB had requested a hybrid model for their matches in ODI WC 2023 during the ICC meeting. It was assumed that Pakistan would play all their matches in Bangladesh (*neutral venue). PCB denied those reports but mentioned that they would wait for the proper forum at the right time. It looks unlikely that there would be two venues, especially for only one team.

Concerns for ICC

Pakistani players need to get visa clearance from the Indian government for ODI WC 2023 & if PCB opts out of the tournament then there would be massive consequences for PCB. ICC must find the middle ground on this issue of BCCI & PCB as these two nations not only have a huge pedigree but are the two giants of World Cricket.
