Ben Stokes has come out of retirement and will be making a comeback in the ODI series against New Zealand. He will also be a part of the ODI squad that will be announced for the ODI World Cup eventually.
Stokes breaking his ODI retirement became one of the most viral news updates in the last couple of days. The Test skipper was persuaded by ODI skipper Jos Buttler to which he responded positively. Stokes’ ODI comeback is being seen as a great positive move towards England defending the title later this year.
Aakash Chopra in his recent Youtube video said that former Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be very happy with Stokes’ ODI return. He said how Kohli considers the Southpaw as the best player to play under pressure situations.
“If Ben Stokes is coming back, the first thing is that Virat Kohli will be happy because he is one of his especially liked players. He said as well that no one plays better than him under pressure” Chopra said.
Chopra further highlighted Stokes’ ability to play big knocks under pressure. He scored an unbeaten 84 and then 8 off three in the Super Over as England won the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand. In the T20 World Cup final last year against Pakistan, Ben Stokes scored 52 off 49 balls to take his team to victory.
Ben Stokes Is A Big-Match Player: Aakash Chopra
“Actually, Luke Wright, who is a selector, has also said the same thing that no one performs better than him under pressure. While other people fall apart, he shines, he is that kind of a player – a big-match player” the former Indian opener added further.
Chopra also spoke about the role England might give to Stokes in the World Cup. He expects him to bat in the middle order and drive the game. He said that the team would look forward to Stokes playing come inspirational knocks.
“His captaincy was inspirational in the recent Ashes and he played extremely inspirational knocks under pressure as well. That’s the kind of role England are expecting, that he will come and do well under pressure. He will be seen batting in the middle order in the middle overs and he will be given the job to drive the game” Chopra concluded saying.
England face New Zealand on October 5 in Ahmedabad to kick off the ICC World Cup 2023 campaign.
