The West Indies will be the hosts of the 9th edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024, with the United States of America (USA) co-hosting the tournament. However, News18 CricketNext reported that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering changing the venue of the marquee tournament.

As per a report on CricketNext, the T20 World Cup will be moved to England due to the lack of cricketing infrastructure in the USA and West Indies. The ICC will swap hosts for the 2024 and 2030 editions of the event to allow USA Cricket to develop the infrastructure to host the multination event.

In November 2021, The ICC released a list of 14 countries that will host the eight new men’s tournaments for the cycle 2024-31. England, Ireland, and Scotland were awarded the T20 World Cup in 2030.

ICC Planning to move 2024 T20 World Cup out of West Indies and the USA

“There is a situation at hand. The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging and it is likely that the ICC could well swap the hosts for 2024 and 2030 edition of the event. It will also allow USA Cricket to get the infrastructure in order before 2030 and allow them to set the house in order too,” a source close to the developments told CricketNext.

“Right now, it will be a rushed process to get the venues ready. England were already allotted the 2030 World Cup and they, unlike other nations, can host an event in June-July,” added the source.

The report further added that the USA is not ready to host the upcoming edition of the World Cup in the short format as they haven’t prepared the venues yet.

“Where will you host it? I can tell you that the ICC site visits which happened recently, many parks, free spaces with some green cover to be precise, were being explored to have a modular set-up in place for the World Cup. Modular stands and everything else also modular in nature,” the report further added.

“But it’s going to be one hell of a task to even pull that off and even if they do, not entirely sure whether it would meet ICC standards. There are lot of ICC checklists for a venue and I highly doubt the modular or the makeshift venues will make the cut.”
