According to reports, Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will be under tremendous pressure to perform well in the New Zealand series as he might be dropped from the team which will tour South Africa if he fails at home.
KL Rahul has suffered a muscle strain on his left thigh and Tuesday it was reported that the in-form opening batsman won’t be providing his services to the team in the New Zealand Test series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have named Suryakumar Yadav as his replacement in the team.

The Test series between India and New Zealand is scheduled to begin from November 25 at Green Park, Kanpur and the second and last Test match of the series will be played from December 3 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Although Rahane will be leading the side in the first Test match with his deputy Cheteshwar Pujara, in the second game Virat Kohli will join the team and he will take the charge. Also, it has been confirmed by the stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane that Shreyas Iyer will be making his debut and will be batting in the middle order in place of Virat Kohli in the first Test match.
This Is Ajinkya Rahane’s Redemption Series, If He Can’t Get It, Selectors Will Get Both Suryakumar And Iyer In South Africa – Reports
Meanwhile, reports claim that the New Zealand Test series is a redemption series for Ajinkya Rahane and if he fails India might include both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav in the team for South Africa tour which will begin from December 17. Speaking to Sportskeeda a source close to the Indian team said:
“This is his redemption series. If he can’t get it, they [selectors] will get both Surya and Shreyas in South Africa. He is under clear pressure to deliver, all selectors’ eyes will be on him because this is his final test. If he fails here, he might find it difficult to be on the team to South Africa,”
Ajinkya Rahane has been out of form for a very long time now and many cricket pundits have opined that he should be dropped from the team after his extremely poor run. He has scored just two fifties since smashing a century in the Boxing Day Test. In 2021 Ajinkya Rahane has scored just 372 runs at an average of 19.5. If he once again fails in the home Test series he might be dropped and Rohit Sharma might be named as permanent vice-captain in the Test team.
