Australia spin spearhead Nathan Lyon is confident of a good display from Todd Murphy in the ongoing Ashes series against England. The star spinner has been ruled out of the last three Tests of the series owing to a calf injury.

Lyon suffered the injury while fielding on day three of the recently-concluded second Ashes Test at Lord’s. He was seen walking on crutches on the fourth morning before he bravely decided to come out to bat. Lyon, however, did not bowl in the second innings and has been sidelined for the remainder of the five-match series.

With Lyon out, Murphy is all set to make his Ashes debut. The highly-rated spinner made his Test debut in India in February this year and hit the ground running in international cricket.

The right-arm off-spinner picked up an impressive seven wickets in his maiden Test innings. He played in all four Tests of the series and picked a total of 14 wickets.

Nathan Lyon backs Todd Murphy to do well:

Replacing Nathan Lyon is no mean task, especially for Murphy who has played only 12 first-class games so far. Lyon, however, is confident that his younger teammate has the ability to do well in international cricket.

The veteran spinner has spent a good amount of time with the youngster this year and has backed him to do well as the team’s lead spinner.

“His stock ball is good enough in international cricket. We have seen that in India in arguably the hardest place to bowl spin,” Lyon was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“It will be a different challenge with the England batters. If they do come at him, it provides Todd with a decent challenge. But a chance to leave his footmarks here in England. It is a big Ashes series, he is excited by the opportunity,” he added.

As of now, it is not clear whether Lyon will remain in England for the remainder of the Ashes or fly home for rehab. He, however, has made it clear that he is always ready to help Murphy no matter where he will be.

“I sat with Todd in the last session there (on day four) and spoke about spin bowling as we do. I have a lot of confidence in Todd. He is a great kid. He is willing to learn along the way,” Lyon said.

“I have told him my phone is always on, it doesn’t matter if I am sitting in the changeroom with him or I am sitting at home watching it in bed,” he added.

Lyon will be missing a Test for Australia for the first time since 2013. Last week, he became the first-ever bowler to play 100 consecutive Tests. Meanwhile, Australia holds a 2-0 lead in the series and needs just a draw in the last three Tests to retain the Ashes.
