Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to wish a speedy recovery to senior India pacer Mohammed Shami who recently underwent an Achilles tendon surgery. Shami had been struggling with ankle and heel for a while which restricted him from participating in any form of cricket since November 2023. The last time he appeared in a competitive match was during the CWC final against Australia on November 19th.

Mohammed Shami himself had given an update on his injury with a post on X yesterday. He informed his fans and media outlets that his Achilles surgery was successful but his comeback cannot be made possible anytime soon. That means, the Gujarat Titans and the Indian team will head into IPL 2024 and ICC T20 World Cup in June without the right-arm pacer.

“Just had a successful heel operation on my achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet,” Shami wrote on X.

Narendra Modi is confident that Mohammed Shami will return soon

Nobody will ever be able to forget the Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign Mohammed Shami had and nobody can forget the final loss either. In what could have been a sensational crowning in front of home support, the Indian team had to settle down with the runners-up medal instead of lifting the trophy.

In order to console the players, PM Narendra Modi visited the Indian dressing room and praised them for their efforts. The best moment that came from there was when he hugged and patted Mohammed Shami who had wreaked havoc in the tournament by registering 24 wickets in just 7 outings.

And now that Shami is in need of support more than ever, Narendra Modi didn’t miss out and wrote a message for him. Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health, @MdShami11! I’m confident you’ll overcome this injury with the courage that is so integral to you.” – Narendra Modi wrote on his X handle.

Big blows for Gujarat Titans and Team India

Mohammed Shami is now set to be out of action for at least the next 5-6 months. And that will see him miss two major tournaments – the IPL and the T20 WC. It is definitely going to be a big blow for his IPL team Gujarat Titans and also for Rohit Sharma‘s team India who will begin their WC campaign against Ireland on June 5.

The right-arm pacer has been a part of every ICC event for India since the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Be it the 2016 T20 World Cup or the 2017 Champions Trophy, Shami has been a part of them all. The amount of experience he brings in with him is invaluable and it will be fair to say that his expertise will be missed badly.

Due to his injury, Mohammed Shami has missed all of the subsequent bilateral series that followed after CWC 2023. He could have been a part of the 2-match Test tour of South Africa as well as the ongoing 5-match home Test series against England. But nonetheless, now that he is unavailable, all we can hope for is that he recovers well and on time before India’s tour of Australia later this year.
