Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri made a big statement about himself, claiming that he would have earned millions in the auction if the Indian Premier League (IPL) was introduced back in the 80s.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007 and the first edition of the tournament was played in 2008. Since then the marquee tournament has been held every year and with the addition of two new teams in the 15th edition of the tournament in 2022, the IPL became a 10-team tournament.

During his on-air conversation with his ex-teammate Kris Srikkanth on Fan Code during the 1st T20I match of the five-match T20I series between India and West Indies, Shastri said that he would have been leading an Indian Premier League (IPL) side and would also be earning in millions at the auction.

Former cricketer Kris Srikkanth burst into laughter after hearing Shastri’s big statement and gave a savage reply to him mentioning Kapil Dev and Viv Richards.

“I mean IPL, had it been in our times, you would have been captaining one side, I would have been captaining one side. No question about that. And at least a couple of millions in the auction, that is most important,” said Shastri.

“Just imagine Kapil Dev and Viv Richards, Ravi. What would happen to them?,” Srikkanth reacted.

“That would have been fun,” Shastri replied.

Earlier, Shastri was asked how much he would have gone for in an IPL auction. The former India head coach replied by saying that he would have been sold for INR 15 crore.

Comfortably in the 15 crore bracket. Comfortably! And captain of the side. No question. It’s a no-brainer,” Shastri said while speaking to ESPNcricinfo in March 2022.
