As Team India take on Afghanistan in the first T20I of the three-match series, young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will miss out on the match. Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first on a cold evening at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Rohit will open with Shubman Gill and along with Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Avesh Khan, and Kuldeep Yadav will miss out on the first IND vs AFG T20I match.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has been brilliant in his 15-match old T20I career and has slammed 430 runs at a strike rate of 159.25. While speaking on the toss, Rohit Sharma revealed that Jaiswal was not available for selection. Later, BCCI informed in a tweet, that Yashasvi has a sore right groin due to which he will not play the first IND vs AFG T20I match.
Yashasvi Jaiswal to miss first IND vs AFG T20I match
Rohit Sharma said during the toss, “We will bowl first. No particular reason, the pitch is good and it doesn’t change a lot here. A lot to gain from the 3 games, we haven’t had too much T20 cricket leadingto the World Cup, there’s IPL, but this is an international game andwe’ll try to achieve a few things. I had a chat with rahul bhai regarding the combination going forward and what we need to do as a group. That’s what we’ll try to do, but winning is the most important thing. Sanju Samson, Avesh, Yashashvi (who didn’t pull off well) and Kuldeep miss out.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal started off his T20I career in August last year during the five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Jaiswal played a knock of 84* runs in his second match and showcased his talent on the world stage. Jaiswal also slammed a century against Nepal during the Asian Games 2023 held in Hangzhou, China.
During the press conference ahead of the first IND vs AFG T20I match, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid had made it clear that Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with Rohit Sharma in Mohali. However, his sudden injury will now give Shubman Gill a chance to shine against the Afghani team and cement his opening slot.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was not able to leave much impact on the South African tour and failed to score many runs during the T20I and the Test series.
Getting back to the IND vs AFG first T20I match, the Indian cricket team will want to win their last bilateral T20I series ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. The T20 World Cup 2024 will start on June 1 whereas India will play their first match against Ireland on June 5.
Yashasvi Jaiswal will prove to be a huge bonus for India if he continues to play the way he does. Jaiswal provides an additional left-handed batting option to India at the top and also sets up the tone for the team.
