Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Gautam Gambhir gets much less credit than he deserves for his knock in the ICC World Cup 2011 final. Ravichandran Ashwin also said that Gautam Gambhir is the most misunderstood cricketer in India.
Gautam Gambhir scored the most 97 runs against Sri Lanka during India’s victory in ODI World Cup 2011 final. However, MS Dhoni won the Player of the Match award in that match for his unbeaten 91 including the winning six. Often, fans give more credit to MS Dhoni for his performance in the final.
Gautam Gambhir Gets Much Less Credit Than He Deserves: Ravichandran Ashwin
During a conversation with Harsha Bhogle on YouTube, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that Gautam Gambhir is the most misunderstood cricketer in India.
“Gautam Gambhir is the most misunderstood cricketer in India. The greatest team man is the greatest individual in terms of taking a fight. He might not be very expressive, but he is in your face. It was not just that knock (the WC final); there were several knocks leading into the final, where Gautam has been an unsung hero,” the off-spinner said.

Ravichandran Ashwin also added that Gautam Gambhir played a leading role in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. He also feels that Gambhir gets less credit than deserves for his knock.
“He literally did not allow the pressure to get to us. Selfless. I would have said if he could have been 120–130 not-out but selfless. He wanted to shut the game out. I have always had massive respect for the man. People give him much less credit than he deserves,” the right-arm spinner further said.
Gambhir has been often slammed by fans for his criticism of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli on a few occasions. Notably, he had a verbal spat with Virat Kohli during IPL 2023. Ashwin was part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 2011.
Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin is also part of the India squad in the ICC World Cup 2023. Ashwin was not picked in the squad earlier but was later admitted as a replacement for Axar Patel. India will face Australia in their opening match on Sunday, October 8.
