Kuldeep Yadav, the 28-year-old India spinner achieved an elite feat after his four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the fourth Super Fours match of the Asia Cup on Tuesday (September 12th) and became the quickest Indian spinner to bag 150 wickets in the 50-over format cricket.

However, Kuldeep Yadav is the second fastest Indian bowler to achieve the landmark after Indian pacer Mohammed Shami who took 80 matches to get there. On the other hand, Kuldeep took 88 games to clinch the feat.

In the fourth Super Fours match, India won the toss and opted to bat first. In the first inning, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had a decent start and made a partnership of 80 runs. Rohit Sharma scored 53 runs from 48 balls with a strike rate of 110.42, whereas Shubman Gill played a 19-run knock from 25 balls with a strike rate of 76.00.

Virat Kohli could not make a mark in the match and scored only three runs. KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan tried hard for the Men in Blue and gave a target of 214 runs. But, Dunith Wellalage, the 20-year-old Sri Lankan spinner caught all the limelight from the audiences after his maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

Wellalage got some important wickets in his bag and dismissed Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya.

In the second inning, the Sri Lanka openers failed to have a good start which made it tough for them to chase the target. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dunith Wellalage tried hard to lead the island country but failed to reach the target.

Dhananjaya played a 41-run knock from 66 balls with a strike rate of 62.12. Whereas, Dunith Wellalage played a 42-run knock from 46 balls with a strike rate of 91.30 but still Sri Lanka lost the match by 41 runs.

For the past year or so bowling really really well: Rohit Sharma on Kuldeep Yadav

While speaking during the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma praised Kuldeep Yadav and said that he has been bowling really well in the last one year and the 28-year-old worked really hard to reach this level.

“Was not an easy target to defend as the pitch got easier at the end and we had to put it consistently in one area and I think we did quite well. [on Kuldeep] For the past year or so bowling really really well. He has done a lot of hard work on his rhythm. He went back to the drawing board and worked on it. The ball is coming out nicely and you can see the results in the last 10 ODIs,” Rohit Sharma said on Kuldeep Yadav.

India will square off against Bangladesh on Friday (September 15th) in the sixth Super Fours match of the Asia Cup 2023.
