Batting great Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at Michael Vaughan for his comments over Joe Root surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of most Test runs. He didn't go easy on the England legend, saying that his comments were ridiculous and asked him to elaborate on what he said.
England National Cricket Team batter Joe Root has been slamming runs for fun in Test cricket. The right-hander has entered the top 6 in the leading run-getters list in the longest format of the game. He also has the most number of tons for the Three Lions.
With the way Joe Root has been going, there won't be a surprise if he goes past Sachin Tendulkar's record of most runs in Test cricket. With the England batter making runs consistently for the team, Michael Vaughan came up with a bold statement for the former captain of the Test team.
He stated that Joe Root will be surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of most Test runs soon. But he also mentioned that BCCI would be taking every step possible to make sure that the record of the former India skipper remains intact, and they won't be letting Root go past that.
Sunil Gavaskar thrashes Michael Vaughan, saying how Joe Root surpassing Sachin Tendulkar will be better for Test cricket
Replying to this, Sunil Gavaskar thrashed Michael Vaughan, saying that how Joe Root surpassing Sachin Tendulkar will be better for Test cricket. He stressed that there was nothing wrong with the format. He also slammed the former England cricketer for his 'BCCI won't let Root past comments', saying that foreign media is peddling the wrong narrative. Writing in his column for Sportstar, Sunil Gavaskar explained:
"Recently, I heard someone saying it would be good for Test cricket if Joe Root overtook Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs and centuries in Test match cricket. Please tell us what's wrong with Test cricket presently when Tendulkar owns the record and how will Test cricket be better if (and that's huge if) an Englishman goes on to hold it. In what way will it be better? Kindly enlighten us,"
"For some strange reason, there's a perception overseas that BCCI does not like Test cricket. That's a ridiculous notion, as India plays more than half a dozen Test matches every season, be it at home or away. Just because the IPL is massively successful doesn't mean BCCI is not interested in promoting Test cricket, but that's the narrative that's being peddled by the overseas media."
Sunil Gavaskar further talked about the venue for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, saying that if England doesn't qualify, then the venue gets changed to Southampton or The Oval in London. He added:
"The ICC just announced that the WTC fir will be played at Lord's next June. Well, we have heard the same declaration twice earlier, but as soon as it's seen that England is not going to qualify for the final, the venue gets changed to Southampton or The Oval in London.
"Now that England is winning more Test matches in this period and there's a good chance that they may get to the final, we are being told the final will be at Lord's. Let's wait and see. As the old Indian saying goes, DILLI (Lord's) abhi bhi door hai." He concluded.
