The IND vs ENG first Test in Hyderabad will resume with the third day’s play on Saturday, January 27. India after day 2 were on 421/7, leading by 175 runs.

Team India scored 302 runs for the loss of wickets throughout the day’s play. Every batter got starts with KL Rahul (86) and Ravindra Jadeja (81*) going on to score fifties. Shubman Gill (23), Shreyas Iyer (35), KS Bharat (41), and Axar Patel (35*) also chipped in with crucial contributions.

It was a toiling day for the England bowlers. Mark Wood did not bowl too many overs throughout the day as did Jack Leach. Ben Stokes, the England captain, decided to operate with the inexperienced spinners Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley. India cashed in on scoring opportunities as the duo bowled expensive overs. Rehan who bowled just three overs on the opening day went on to bowl 20 overs on day two. Hartley who was expensive, took the wickets of Gill and Rahul to show for his efforts.

The Indian batters had good partnerships throughout their innings. Barring Ravichandran Ashwin every Indian batter got starts and India lost two back-to-back wickets just once that too at the end of the day’s play.

The 63-run stand between Jadeja and Axar Patel ensured that India ended the day with a healthy lead of 175 runs. This was after India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal on the very first over of the day’s play. The early wickets of Jaiswal and Gill gave England some hope but the middle-order batters scored most of the runs, piling the misery on England.

The inexperience of the England bowlers was on show once again. The pressure of Mark Wood being the specialist seamer was visible as he bowled some wayward deliveries. He was brought in by Stokes to dismiss Shreyas Iyer with his short-pitched deliveries but he could not direct them properly at the batter.

Every partnership in the Indian innings increased the pressure on the England bowlers. Joe Root with his part-time spin was the best of the lot on day 2. He got the ball to spin from both over and around the wicket.

Speaking about how the pitch played on day two, KL Rahul said that it became slower as the ball got older. In the process, he hinted about the pitch getting even slower in the remaining three days. He further said that the talk within the team was to score as many runs as possible on day 2.

“A bit of turn, it became slower and slower as the ball went old. Was a challenge, I had to wait for my opportunity to play shots,” said Rahul.

Speaking about the weather conditions for IND vs ENG day 3, the temperature will be around 30 degrees throughout the day. There will be hazy sunshine in the afternoon. The temperature in the evening will drop to around 21 degrees in the afternoon. Light permitting the day’s play can continue till almost 5 pm IST.
