Team India head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan remains in contention for a spot in the T20 World Cup. Rahul Dravid stated that the team management will make decisions regarding the final team composition in the coming months.

Ishan Kishan has been a regular member of the Indian team across all formats over the past year. The young wicketkeeper batter did not get a consistent run in the player XI. He made a significant impact in the limited opportunities he got in international cricket.

The 25-year-old requested a break before the two-match Test series against South Africa, citing mental fatigue. The team management granted his request, releasing him from the squad. KL Rahul took on the role of wicketkeeper in the Test series in South Africa during his absence.

Ishan Kishan was not included in the Indian squad during the recent Afghanistan series. A few reports suggested that the young batter was punished for disciplinary reasons. However, Rahul Dravid clarified that Kishan was unavailable for selection for the Afghanistan series.

Kishan was expected to be selected for the home series against England. However, he was not included in the squad for the first two Tests of the five-match series. The team opted for three designated keepers, including KL Rahul, KS Bharat, and the uncapped Dhruv Jurel.

During this period, Ishan Kishan was seen training with all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, confirmation on whether he chose to make himself unavailable for India’s selection remains unverified. Notably, Kishan did not play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.

Despite uncertainties about Ishan Kishan‘s future in the Indian squad, Coach Rahul Dravid affirmed that he is in contention for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad, alongside Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson.

“We’ve got quite a few keeping options. We saw a couple of guys in this series, whether it is Sanju, or Jitesh. You speak about Rahul, there is Ishan, Rishabh… all of them are in the mix. We just have to see how things pan out in the course of next few months and then we can take a call what’s the best way to go,” he said after India’s thrilling win in the final T20I in Bengaluru.
