Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Aakash Chopra has shared his views on the wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul getting ruled out of India’s first two matches of the upcoming Asia Cup.

Asia Cup 2023 will commence on Wednesday, August 30, and the final of the competition will be held on Sunday, September 17. India National Cricket Team will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan National Cricket Team on Saturday, September 2, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Then, the Men In Blue will take on the Nepal National Cricket Team on Monday, September 4, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Speaking at India’s pre-departure press interaction in Bengaluru, India head coach Rahul Dravid said that Rahul is progressing well. Still, he won’t be available for the first two matches in the Asia Cup 2023.

“KL has had a good week here [at India’s conditioning camp] with us. Trained well and done a lot of things. He’s progressing really well on the route that we want to take. But he will be unavailable for the Kandy leg of the trip,” Dravid said at India’s pre-departure press interaction in Bengaluru.

“The NCA [National Cricket Academy] will be looking after him for the next few days while we are traveling. We will reassess on September 4 and take it from there. But signs are looking good and he’s progressing really well.”

Rohit-Gill-Ishan bat 1-2-3 and then Kohli bats at 4? – Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra took to X to react to the news of Rahul’s unavailability. He said that the wicketkeeper-batter’s absence opens up a host of discussion points and it also gives a headache to the Indian team management.

Chopra highlighted that Indian management will have to decide whether they will push Virat Kohli at No.4 to accommodate Ishan Kishan at the top or shift Kishan to the No.5 position. He also spoke about the idea of Shubman Gill being benched to make way for Kishan at the top.

“KLR unavailable for the first two games. Opens up a host of discussion points…does Ishan open? If yes, where will Shubman bat? Or Rohit-Gill-Ishan bat 1-2-3 and then Kohli bats at 4? Or Rohit-Gill open…Kohli at 3 and Ishan at 5? Or Gill gets benched and Tilak/SKY bat at 5? #AsiaCup,” Aakash Chopra wrote on X.

Notably, KL Rahul had fully recovered from the thigh injury he sustained during IPL 2023, but during the Asia Cup squad announcement press conference, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had revealed that the wicketkeeper-batter has picked up a fresh niggle.
