Former cricketer Abhishek Nayar backed the team management’s decision to exclude veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Abhishek Nayar said that Kuldeep Yadav deserved the selection over Yuzvendra Chahal, emphasizing the margins are very small.

Yuzvendra Chahal was not selected by the selectors for the upcoming Asia Cup. Notably, the right-arm leg-spinner was omitted from the squad for the T20 World Cup 2021. The bowler was later included in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 but did not get a chance to play in a single game.

They Feel Can Do The Best For Them – Abhishek Nayar

In an interview with the Times of India, Abhishek Nayar emphasized that the captain and selectors have chosen spinners, hoping they will deliver in the upcoming tournaments.

“In terms of spinners, they (captain and selectors) have picked the spinners that they feel can do the best for them,” Nayar told TimesofIndia.com.

“Once you reach that level, be it Chahal or Kuldeep, the margin of error is not too much. The margins are very very small. That was the right decision from the captain to pick Kuldeep ahead of Chahal,” he added.

Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel were named as the three spinners in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Chahal’s snub indicates that he might not feature in the much-awaited World Cup at home scheduled between October and November.

Arshdeep Was Not In The Scheme Of Things – Abhishek Nayar

The former Indian batter shared his thoughts on Prasidh Krishna’s selection over Arshdeep Singh in the squad for the upcoming continental tournament.

“The conditions play a big role. If the captain Rohit Sharma is comfortable with the fact that he needs pace, if he thinks that someone can come and bring a different dimension, I don’t see any harm in it.”

“Arshdeep was not in the scheme of things. I truly believe that Prasidh Krishna has the potential to play ODIs and should be backed completely,” he concluded.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Prasidh Krishna are the pacers in the lineup. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will contribute with his bowling. Notably, the squad lacks a left-arm pacer, as all the pacers are right-arm bowlers.

India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson (traveling reserve).
