Piyush Chawla, the India spinner opened up on Shreyas Iyer’s inclusion in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad and said that the decision needs to be questioned.

On Tuesday (September 5th), Ajit Agarkar, the India chief selector, and Rohit Sharma held a press conference where they announced the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. Ajit Agarkar-led team selection committee removed Prasidh Krishna, and Tilak Varma from the squad and kept Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan.

India’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (Vice-captain), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.

The team is currently in Sri Lanka taking part in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 and will face Pakistan once again in the Super Four match of the tournament on Sunday (September 10th) at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

We are talking about both of them, why not Shreyas Iyer?: Piyush Chawla

While speaking on Star Sports, Piyush Chawla questioned Shreyas Iyer’s place in the playing eleven in the forthcoming ODI World Cup. Chawla said that Ishan Kishan needs to move ahead in the batting order because of the way he performed against Pakistan.

The India spinner also said that his performance will also solve many problems of the absence of a left-hander in the middle order in the Men in Blue squad.

“We are talking about both of them, why not Shreyas Iyer? Shreyas Iyer’s place should also be questioned. Ishan cannot remain in the reserves now because of the way he has batted in the top order.

“People had a question about how he would bat in the middle order and the way he batted in the middle order after coming into bat in a tough situation, he is going through good form and he solves the problem of the absence of a left-hander in the middle order, which we often talk about,” Piyush Chawla said.

Rohit Sharma-led India will begin their ODI World Cup 2023 voyage against Australia on October 8th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Meanwhile, the most anticipated match of the tournament will be played on October 14th between India and Pakistan at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
