Indian middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav expressed his optimism about replicating his success from the T20I format in the 50-over format. Suryakumar Yadav admitted that he is striving to improve his performance with the help of Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

Suryakumar Yadav was included in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2023 despite his poor performances in recent times. The right-handed batter scored 511 runs in 26 ODI matches at an average of 24.33. He hasn’t scored a half-century in his last 20 innings in the 50-over format.

Why Can’t I Crack The ODI Code? – Suryakumar Yadav

Speaking on the ‘Follow the Blues’ Show on Star Sports, Suryakumar Yadav opined that ODI cricket is the most challenging format and that batters need to pace their innings.

“I will try and perform the role assigned to me. This is one format I am really looking to do well. Everyone keeps saying that my T20 is going well but why can’t I crack the ODI code?” Suryakumar Yadav told Star Sports.

“That’s the exact word but I am practicing. I feel this is the most challenging format. You need to play all three formats in one – first with patience, then strike rotation and hit towards the end like T20 type,” he added.

The 32-year-old failed to make an impact with the bat in the recent three-match ODI series against the West Indies. Surya scored 78 runs in three innings with an average of 26 and a strike rate of 97.50.

Trying To Maintain The Same Intent – Suryakumar Yadav

The Mumbai cricketer said that he had discussions with Rohit, Dravid, and Kohli to improve his performances in the 50-over format. He emphasized that his approach would vary based on the match situation.

“I have been speaking with Rahul sir, Rohit, and Virat so hopefully I will ‘crack this code’ starting this tournament,” Surya further added.

“At least I am trying to maintain the same intent and approach. That shouldn’t change, but I’m trying to play more according to the situation. For example, if I am coming to bat in the 30th over, I can’t play like a T20I.”

Suryakumar should seize the opportunity in the Asia Cup to solidify his position in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad. The selectors have chosen a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup, which will be reduced to 15 for the World Cup.

India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson (traveling reserve).
