IND vs WI: Shubman Gill Breaks Babar Azam’s Record In 2nd ODI

Although Shubman Gill could smash just 34 runs in IND vs WI 2nd ODI on Saturday (July 29). the Indian opener managed to break Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s record in the match.

Shubman Gill opened the innings with Ishan Kishan in India vs West Indies 2nd ODI in Kensington Oval in Barbados. After getting out for just 7 runs in the opening encounter, the 23-year-old came up with a better show in the 2nd ODI, smacking 34 runs off 49 balls with 5 boundaries.

Shubman Gill Breaks Babar Azam’s Record

With his 34 runs in the 2nd ODI against West Indies, Shubman Gill broke Babar Azam’s record for most runs after playing 26 ODI innings. Shubman Gill accounts for 1352 runs after playing 26 ODIs in his international career.

Earlier, Babar Azam held the record for most runs after 26 ODI innings. The right-handed batsman had mustered 1322 runs after playing his first 26 games. Hence, Gill has leapfrogged Azam in runs tally after 26 ODI encounters.

The Gujarat Titans player has shown impeccable form in ODIs so far. With 1352 runs in 26 ODIs, Gill owns a batting average of 61.45 in his ODI career. He has also shattered 4 centuries and 5 half-centuries in the 50-over format, including a wonderful double century. He is also the leading run-getter for India in ODIs this year.

However, Shubman Gill has slightly struggled in IND vs WI series. The Punjab player got out for just 7 runs in the 1st ODI and 34 in the 2nd ODI against West Indies. In the Test series too, Gill failed to come up with a powerful knock. Across 3 innings of 2 Tests, he scored 6, 10, and an unbeaten 29.

India Lost the 2nd ODI By 6 Wickets

Meanwhile, India lost the 2nd ODI to West Indies by 6 wickets. With a young team taking the field in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India could only come up with 181-6 on the scoreboard.

After openers Shubman Gill (34) and Ishan Kishan (52) came up a 90-run opening stand, the rest batters fell like a house of cards. Sanju Samson (9), Axar Patel (1), and Hardik Pandya (1) got out in quick succession. Later, Suryakumar Yadav (24) and Ravindra Jadeja (10) also failed to pile up enough runs on the board.

For West Indies, captain Shai Hope (63*) and Keacy Carty (48*) led the chase with their wonderful unbeaten knocks. West Indies chased down the target in just 36.4 overs with 6 wickets to level the three-match series 1-1.
