West Indies performance mentor Brian Lara expressed confidence in the Kraigg Brathwaite-led team, stating that they will perform well in the upcoming Test series against India. Brian Lara highlighted that the West Indies cricket team are heading in the right direction.

The West Indies failed to impress in the first two editions of the World Test Championship (WTC). The Windies faced an early exit from the Super Six stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup qualifiers. The Men in Maroon’s last victory against India in a Test at home was in 2002.

The Guys Are Moving In The Right Direction – Brian Lara

Speaking ahead of the Test series, Brian Lara termed the Indian team as one of the top teams in the world in both home and away conditions.

“We have two very important Test matches which start the two-year cycle (World Test Championships) for us, it is against India. At home and away from home, they are one of the top teams in the world,” Lara said.

“I think the guys are moving in the right direction, in terms of where we started the camp and where we are. It is just a few days off from the first match at Dominica, but it’s a young group, ably lead by Kraigg Brathwaite.

But I feel that some of the guys can come into their own in this series, it is a tough opposition but I feel that’s the way we can get the best out of them,” he added.

They Have That Sort Of Attitude To Want To Learn – Brian Lara

Brian Lara expressed confidence in the abilities of the current players, even though they have limited first-class experience. He believes that these players have the potential to perform at the highest level.

“Great capable players, young and of course, you would have loved if they had a lot more experience in the first-class arena but looking at their style of play and attitude, I belief they do have what it takes to perform at the highest level,” he further stated.

“It may take some time but obviously as an international cricketer if you are entering this stage, no matter what age you enter, you got to learn very, very quickly. And, I think they have that sort of attitude to want to learn and (are) willing to listen,” he concluded.

The Kraigg Brathwaite-led team will kick off their campaign in the WTC 2023-25 cycle with the series against India. The first Test will be held at Windsor Park in Dominica between July 12 and 16. The second Test will be played at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad between July 20 and 24.
