Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes the upcoming tour of West Indies will give Umran Malik a good opportunity to bounce back after the disappointing outing in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

The express pacer failed to live up to the expectations in IPL 2023 while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Expectations were sky-high from him this year after his breakthrough season in the IPL last year. In IPL 2022, the right-arm pacer picked up 22 wickets and earned his maiden call-up from Team India.

He, however, failed to do well this year. In 8 games, he managed to pick up only five wickets while going wicketless across his last four appearances for the Hyderabad-based outfit. Fortunately, the poor performance in IPL 2023 did not make the selectors ignore him for the upcoming series against West Indies.

Brad Hogg’s advice for Umran Malik:

As Umran Malik gets ready for the series against West Indies, Brad Hogg has said that the assignment will be important for the pacer as well as his teammates Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh. The World Cup winner stated that the tour of the West Indies will be important in teaching Umran that it is not only about pace.

“Pandya is struggling with the bat a little bit, but he has got the potential, he has shown it in the past. I think this will be a very important series for Arshdeep to develop. I think with the IPL that he has just had, the coming series will be a lesson for Umran Malik. He will realize that it is not just about pace,” Hogg said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

Speaking further, Hogg praised the Indian selectors for picking a young squad for the upcoming T20I series. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel ignored the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and named a youthful side, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup next year.

“I really like the way that the selectors have gone there, they have gone for youth, they want to see what is coming through, they want to give them international experience, more opportunities moving forward with the T20 World Cup,” he said.
