Former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels that IND vs WI series is very crucial for Sanju Samson. According to Wasim Jaffer, if Sanju Samson wants to qualify for ICC World Cup 2023 squad, he needs to come up with a good show in IND vs WI ODI series.
Sanju Samson is part of the India vs West Indies ODI and T20I series. The wicketkeeper-batsman is part of the squad along with fellow keeper Ishan Kishan. Samson has remained out of the Indian team since the start of this year due to an injury. He played just one T20I game in January against Sri Lanka.
IND vs WI ODI Series Is Very Important For Sanju Samson: Wasim Jaffer
During a discussion on JioCinema, Ranji Trophy legend Wasim Jaffer was asked whether Sanju Samson fits in the scheme of things for ICC World Cup 2023. To this, Jaffer replied that after KL Rahul, Samson can be a backup wicketkeeper for India.
“I think so. KL Rahul will obviously be the first choice if he is fit. After that, Sanju Samson could be the one. It could also be Ishan Kishan as the backup opener and wicketkeeper. Then Sanju might miss out,” Wasim Jaffer said.
The 45-year-old also added that India vs West Indies ODI series is very important for Samson as he can earn a ticket to the ODI World Cup squad if he plays well in the series.
“So this series (IND vs WI ODIs) is very important for Sanju Samson. There has been a slight consistency issue with Samson. But if he plays like that, if he takes responsibility, he could be that second wicketkeeper,” added Jaffer, who was a Test specialist batsman for Team India during his international career.
Although Samson has not played any ODI games this year, he was fabulous last year. In 2022, the right-handed batsman played 10 ODIs and shattered 284 runs in 9 innings at an average of 71.0. With two fifties and a top knock of unbeaten 86 runs, the Rajasthan Royals skipper remained unbeaten in 5 games out of 9.
On the other hand, Ishan Kishan has highly failed to impress in ODIs this year. The left-handed batter scored just 33 runs across 4 ODI games he played in 2023. However, the Jharkhand player shattered a double ODI ton in December 2022 against Bangladesh to script history.
