Suryakumar Yadav scored a brilliant 83 off 44 balls to take India to victory in the third T20I in Guyana on Tuesday. The win kept India alive in the five-match series. SKY’s innings too was a remarkable one considering that it came after he struggled a lot in the ODIs.

SKY struggled to score runs in the ODI series scoring 19, 24, and 35 in the three ODIs. When it was expected that he would make the most of the opportunity he failed. He scored 21 in the first T20I and just one in the second.

SKY needed to bat well in the third T20I with India losing their openers early and that’s exactly what he did. This time though he was his attacking self taking on the West Indies bowlers and scoring runs freely.

Suryakumar scored his 14th T20I half-century to guide India to a seven-wicket win at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Wasim Jaffer in a conversation with ESPN Cricinfo after the third T20I said that SKY came out with a lot of intent, especially against the left-arm spinners.

“To be honest, he looked quite rusty, throughout the ODIs and in the first two T20Is as well. Today was a different Suryakumar Yadav. That can happen with Suryakumar Yadav. He came out with a lot more intent, especially against the left-arm spinner. That’s been his downfall a few times – getting out to left-arm spinners,” said Jaffer.

He further said that SKY the way he batted was a nightmare for the opposition bowlers. The batter added an 87-run stand with Tilak Varma (49*) as the duo complemented each other brilliantly.

“He’s that kind of a batter. He likes to take risks and when it comes off, you get to see an innings like that. Absolute delight. When he is playing like that, he is a nightmare for bowlers and the [opposition] captain,” Jaffer added.

SKY will play his 50th T20I international when India takes on West Indies in the fourth T20I at Lauderhill, Florida on Saturday. After scoring 1164 runs in 31 T20Is last year, Surya has scored 372 runs in nine matches so far in 2023.
