India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal relived his early days in Indian Premier League (IPL) under skipper Virat Kohli during a YouTube show. The right-arm spinner said that Virat Kohli showed a lot of confidence in him during IPL 2014 when he became a member of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Yuzvendra Chahal was part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2014. Virat Kohli was the skipper of the team in the tournament. In IPL 2014, Yuzvendra Chahal played all 14 games for the team and picked 12 wickets.

Virat Kohli Helped Me A Lot: Yuzvendra Chahal

During a conversation on Ranveer Allahbadia’s YouTube channel, Yuzvendra Chahal said that Kohli has always been the same and he hasn’t changed. He further revealed how Virat Kohli helped him in IPL 2014. Chahal said that Virat Kohli showed a lot of confidence in him during the season. He also noted how he was picked over Muttiah Muralitharan and Shadab Jakati in the opening game.

“According to me, he is still the same. On the field, he is still the same. Off the field, he was always calm. On the field, if I know that aggression is helping me, I will do it. He doesn’t harm anyone. Look at Australia under Ricky Ponting, they dominated and kept the opposition under the pump. Now, we give it back. They know that if they sledge [India], they will get it back.”

“I played in the very first match of the 2014 season and Virat bhai helped me a lot. There were big names like Muttiah Muralitharan and Shadab Jakati, but I still played the first game. The kind of confidence that Virat bhai showed in me, I got a wicket with the first ball and got the Man of the Match as well. That gave my confidence a boost,” the 32-year-old spinner said.

Yuzvendra Chahal also feels that Royal Challengers Bangalore was the best team in IPL 2016. He also said it was a roller-coaster season for them, where they reached the final after massive struggles but lost the trophy by just 8 runs.

“Our team in 2016 was the best one. We had Chris Gayle, KL [Rahul] as well. Unfortunately, we lost the final. I felt very bad because we had to win six out of seven matches. We did that. Then in the Qualifier against Delhi, we would have been out if he had lost. We won that game as well. It was a roller-coaster season. We played the final at Chinnaswamy, which we lost by eight runs,” Chahal further added.

Under skipper Virat Kohli, RCB reached the final of IPL 2016. However, they lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and ended as runner-up. Chahal was a key spinner for RCB from IPL 2014 to IPL 2021. In the 2022 season, he was picked by Rajasthan Royals in auction and his long bond with RCB ended.

Meanwhile, Chahal will be next seen in the ODI series against West Indies. He is part of the ODI and T20I series against West Indies. The India vs West Indies ODI series will commence on July 27 after the ongoing Test series. The five-match T20I series will be played later.
