The West Indies defeated India by 8 wickets in the fifth and final T20I at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida on Sunday, August 13. The Men in Maroon clinched the five-match series 3-2, their first T20I series victory against India in the last six years.
The Windies bowlers restricted the Hardik Pandya-led team to a total of 165/9 in the allocated 20 overs. The Caribbean team successfully chased down the target with two overs to spare. Opener Brandon King was named the Player of the Match for his unbeaten knock of 85 runs.
The West Indies Beat India for the First Time Since 2017
The West Indies cricket team’s previous series victory against the Men in Blue came in 2017. The Windies victory ended India’s streak of 12 consecutive unbeaten bilateral series in the shorter format of the game. Notably, this marks India’s first series loss in men’s T20Is in over two years.
Earlier, India got off to a poor start with the bat and lost their openers within three overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma steadied the innings, but Roston Chase broke the partnership. Despite not receiving support from the other end, Suryakumar scored 61 runs off 45 deliveries.
Arshdeep Singh once again provided an early breakthrough with the new ball, dismissing Kyle Mayer for 10 runs. Brendon King and Nicholas Pooran added a 107-run partnership for the second wicket. Shai Hope finished the match with a six off Yashasvi Jaiswal to secure the series victory.
Very Big Series For Us To Beat India – Rovman Powell
West Indies captain Rovman Powell described the victory over India as a significant achievement, highlighting the importance of winning against a strong opponent on home soil.
“It’s difficult to put words to it. Adjectives are inadequate in describing how we feel. The guys are elated. It’s a big series,”Powell said.
“You mention all the stuff that is going on in West Indies cricket, so it’s a very big series for us to beat India at home,” he added.
The series victory will boost their confidence ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 after missing qualification for the upcoming ODI World Cup. The next T20 World Cup will be held in the Caribbean Islands and the United States of America (USA).
