IND vs WI: West Indies Test Squad for India Announced; Rakheem Cornwall Makes A Comeback

West Indies has announced their Test squad for the upcoming series against India. West Indies have inducted two uncapped batsmen Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze, who showed wonderful batting form for West Indies A team earlier.

Notably, star all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall was also recalled into the squad after almost two years. India and West Indies will play two Tests with each other starting July 12 (Wednesday). The 1st Test takes place at Windsor Park in Dominica.

Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze Added To West Indies Squad

While speaking to the press ahead of IND vs WI series, West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes said they were impressed with the batting of Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze for West Indies A earlier this year.

“We were very impressed with the approach to the batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh. These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity,” Desmond Haynes said.

Left-handed batter Alick Athanaze slammed 59 and 27 in a Test match against Bangladesh A in May 2023. He also played an ODI against UAE in which he shattered a brilliant knock of 65 runs. In his FC career, Athanaze has mustered 1825 runs across 30 games.

Kirk McKenzie, another left-hander, is yet to make his international debut in any format. The top-order batter has scored 591 runs in 9 games in First-Class cricket averaging almost 40. He was also part of the Test series against Bangladesh A in May.

Rahkeem Cornwall Returns To Test Team

An interesting addition to West Indies squad for IND vs WI series was bowling all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall. The right-handed batter made his international comeback after almost two years.

He last played a Test match against Sri Lanka in November 2021. In 9 Tests so far, Cornwall has hit 238 runs with 2 fifties. The all-rounder has also grabbed 34 wickets. Cornwall was added to the squad as a replacement for Gudakesh Motie, who is unavailable due to injury.
