India vs England 2021: Harbhajan Singh Has No Doubts In Bestowing Ravichandran Ashwin With Legendary Status

Indian veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh heaped praises for Ashwin and had no doubts in giving him legendary status for his achievements to the Indian cricket team. Ashwin has been phenomenal with the bat and the ball in the ongoing series against England and has proven from time to time that he is one of the greatest match-winner for India in Test cricket.

Ashwin was the man of the match in the second test against England at Chennai where he scored a century and also picked up a fifer in the same test for the third instance in his test career. He recently became the second-fastest bowler in the world to reach the 400 wicket landmark in 77 Tests after Muttiah Muralidharan did it in 72 tests. He also touched the 600-mark in international wickets for India and became the fourth bowler to do so.

Harbhajan Singh Acknowledges The Efforts Of Ashwin

Harbhajan Singh was in praise of Ashwin for reaching the 400 wicket landmark in test cricket and described the efforts behind the achievement. He had no doubts in portraying Ashwin as a legend and lauded him for taking India to a winning position most often. He was happy to see the skipper Kohli calling Ashwin a legend for the achievements and added that he would like to call him the same way when he meets him.

“Taking 400 wickets is a very big thing and that too in Test cricket, a format which tests you mentally, physically and every other way. So to dismiss 400 batsmen in that and win the team match after match is a huge thing. There is no doubt that R Ashwin is a legend,” said Singh.

“Even if he had not taken 400 wickets, it was not that he would not have been considered a legend because he has won India so many matches. It was great to hear Virat Kohli saying that he will be calling Ashwin as a legend going forward. I will also call him a legend when I meet him next time,” observed Harbhajan Singh.

Harbhajan Singh was particularly impressed by Ashwin’s record against the opponent’s main batsmen who have always struggled against the off-spinner. Ashwin has also a scintillating record against the left-handers and Harbhajan mentioned the effect of Ashwin on the opponent’s main batsmen of Ben Stokes and Joe Root.

“A bowler’s main task is to take wickets and that too the one which is most essential for the team, the main batsman from the opposition team. If I see this England batting, there are two big names in Ben Stokes and Joe Root. They have the ability to take England to a situation from where they can control the match.

“So, R Ashwin has a greater responsibility to get them out and he has not done that now but has done that very well from the time he has been playing and I pray that he continues doing so going ahead, that R Ashwin keeps a stranglehold on the main batsmen from the opposition team,” concluded Harbhajan Singh.
