With still more than a month for the start of the Test series between India and England, opener Shubman Gill is believed to be ruled out for the entire series, or at least for some part of it.

According to the latest reports, Shubman Gill has injured his lower leg. The injury is believed to be internal, and its extent or seriousness is not exactly known yet.

The first Test of the 5-match series is slated for August 4 Trent Bridge at while the last Test commences September 10 in Manchester. It’s believed that the right-hander has either sustained a calf muscle injury or hamstring tear which could take significant time to recover; it is also not clear how and when he picked up the injury. He will be monitored by physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai.

“There is a chance that Shubman could be ruled out of the whole Test tour even though it is still a month away. The injury is serious is what we have come to know,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

India’s options for Shubman Gill’s replacement

If Shubman Gill is ruled out of the entire series, then Bengal batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran will be promoted to the squad from standby. However, he would unlikely be the first-choice opener as the likes of Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul are in the squad as well.

Shubman Gill made his debut during the tour of Australia. He replaced Prithvi Shaw at the top and then was preferred over Agarwal to partner Rohit Sharma. The Kolkata Knight Riders opener has played eight Tests so far, scoring 414 runs at an average of 31.84. He was largely impressive in Australia, including scoring 91 in the victorious Brisbane Test, but his form has tapered off a little bit; he played in the WTC Final against New Zealand, scoring 28 and 8.
Agarwal has been the first-choice reserve opener since India opted to go with Rohit Sharma and Gill at the top. Rahul has not been part of Test XI for almost two years, with his last appearance coming against West Indies in 2019. Easwaran has been part of the team’s reserves for a while but is as yet uncapped.
