Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly said to face uncertainty over his selection in India’s white-ball formats. The 35-year-old made his way back to the limited-overs format when he was selected in India’s T20 World Cup squad, he played three matches and picked six wickets.
Ashwin returned to the white-ball formats after a span of over four years since he played the last T20I match against the West Indies in 2017. He was selected for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand just after the T20 World Cup, he played a couple of matches before he was benched for the final game as India swept 3-0 against the Black Caps.

Ravichandran Ashwin returned to ODI cricket in January

Ashwin also returned to India’s ODI set up during the three-match series against the Proteas earlier in January. The Tamil Nadu player paired with Yuzvendra Chahal but they weren’t successful in chipping wickets in the middle overs. Ashwin was benched for the final ODI in Cape Town and subsequently missed the white-ball series against West Indies and Sri Lanka as reports suggested that he was recovering from an unknown injury.
Ashwin is a household name when it comes to Test cricket, especially on home turf where he dismantles the opposition batters with his turn and bounce. In the recently concluded Sri Lanka Test series, the off-spinner surpassed the likes of Kapil Dev and Dale Steyn to reach the eighth spot with 442 Test scalps in the list of leading Test wicket-takers of all time.

Indian selectors planning to move on from Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami in T20Is -Reports

According to a report by Times of India, senior players like Mohammed Shami and R Ashwin could be sidelined from India’s T20I selection. Although Shami is expected to be a part of the ODI team, chances are very less for the Tamil Nadu player to make the cut in the 50-over format.

The report mentioned that Indian selectors are looking to include more multi-skilled players in the team, especially those who are quick in the field.
Ashwin has played 113 ODI matches and 51 T20 Internationals since he made his debut against Sri Lanka in an ODI match in Harare in 2010. He shares 212 wickets across both formats.
