Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) played their first intra-squad match ahead of the second leg of the IPL 2021. Batting stalwart, AB de Villiers, scored a blistering century to start preparation in style.

The squad took to the field to get into rhythm ahead of the IPL which is just four days away. Two teams, RCB A and RCB B were led by Harshal Patel and Devdutt Padikkal respectively. An internet router was used in place of a coin for the toss.

Harshal won the toss and elected to bowl first. The sun was shining bright as the players took the field. The ‘A’ side lost a wicket early on before Mohammad Azharudeen and AB de Villiers stitched a partnership. The Protean reached his fifty in the seventh over as the team upped the ante.

AB de Villiers looked his usual self. He unleashed a few beautiful shots overs cover, looking like he has been playing cricket for a while. He reached his century in the 14th over with RCB’s score at 158/1. His knock consisted of 7 fours and 10 sixes. RCB A finally finished on 212/4.

When we arrived and I got out off the bus, I thought it’s crazy that we’re trying to play a cricket game in the middle of the day. Luckily half an hour later the breeze came up, I told my partner at the crease that it’s much better now and the wicket’s gonna get flat.

We had a lot of fun out there. I’m very happy with the runs on the board. It was very scratchy for the first 20 balls out there. There is nothing more valuable than just getting the runs in the middle,” De Villiers said.

RCB got off to a flying start with KS Bharat and Devdutt Padikkal. Both looked in fine touch and kept the scoreboard ticking. Padikkal was dismissed for 36 off 21 balls but his partner kept going.

Bharat scored a stunning 96 which proved to be the difference-maker in the end. Padikkal’s side needed three runs off the last two balls and they managed to reach it with a boundary. RCB B beat RCB A by seven wickets in the first intra-squad match.
