Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has suggested that the wide calls and no balls for height should also be taken under the ambit of player reviews as those calls play important parts in matches.

His suggestion comes after some major decisions have become a talking point in the ongoing season of the IPL. The most controversial of them was a decision by the on-field umpires in the game between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.

In that game, a hill full-toss was not deemed to be a no-ball by the on-field umpires which created a fury in the DC camp. It led Rishabh Pant to signal his batters to leave the game in the middle. The batting coach, Pravin Amre even went into the pitch to talk to the umpires about the decision.

That particular incident led many cricket pundits to put forth their views and Vettori too has given his take.

Umpires Are Playing A Part Where They Shouldn’t: Daniel Vettori

Daniel Vettori on a show on ESPNCricinfo said, “My suggestion is that all wides and height no-balls should be made available to be reviewed by players. I think, we’re seeing time and time again, that umpires do get them wrong. It’s a very subjective argument and I think the players have a better perspective on it.”

You see wides particularly towards the backend of the innings when a left-arm like Akash Deep crosses the batsman, and more often than not, the ball crosses before the wide lines and the umpires are calling it because of where it ends up for the wicketkeeper. I think they get it wrong time and time again, they are too important a call.”

They have such an effect on the backend of the game. They can diffuse great balls because more often than not, you’re not scoring on them because they’re going through keepers. The umpires are playing a part in the game where they shouldn’t. The players are actually good judges,” the former Royal Challengers Bangalore coach further added.

This point has been raised by many pundits but the concern is that if it is implied then the length of the match may increase as there won’t be a limit on how many reviews a side takes for such calls.
