In what has been the latest development, as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that there could be a delay in the decision on a retention policy for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now expected to make a call at the end of this month.
It is learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could make the announcement during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is in Bengaluru on September 29. Although there is no link between the two bodies, the governing body could surprise by deciding to announce it in the next few days.
As per the reports, it is learned that BCCI will make the announcement in the next 10 days to two weeks. The officials of the governing body have reportedly hinted at a delay in retention policy announcement to the franchise owners. Therefore, the clear picture will be there by the end of the month.
The original date to announce the retention policy for the IPL 2025 was the end of August. But since the decision wasn't made, the franchise owners reportedly contacted the BCCI about the same. They were informed that the decision would come at the end of September.
The reports also claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will be allowing franchises to finalize their retention decisions until 15th November. Even if the governing body releases the policy in the next few days or by the end of September, the team owners will be given a lot of time to finalize their players.
The auction for the IPL 2025 will take place in December, and it is also learned that the franchises will be given the Right to Match (RTM) options, too. There were earlier reports which stated that the BCCI might allow teams to retain at least 6 players along with the RTM options as well.
IPL 2025: BCCI having discussions about whether they want to keep retired players in the uncapped category, MS Dhoni to be retained
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also having discussions about whether they want to keep the retired players in the uncapped category or not. They are having a discussion related to it and want to find out if bringing the old policy will majorly affect the auction purse ahead of the IPL 2025.
If that happens, we might also see MS Dhoni playing one more season in the league. Not only will it help Chennai Super Kings but also the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) as keeper-batter playing one more season will surely benefit the governing body.
The officials of the Chennai Super Kings have mentioned that they are keen to retain MS Dhoni if he decides to play. They mentioned that even if two retentions are allowed, the keeper-batter will be one among them. However, the rule of retired players under the uncapped category is likely to see some of the veteran players like Sunil Narine getting affected because of the salary cap getting reduced.
However, as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that uncapped retired players may not significantly impact the auction purse, as the BCCI will deduct a percentage of the purse based on the number of retentions. This will allow franchisees to determine player prices without necessarily determining the value of each retained player, as has been done currently.
